Stefania Beretta

Stefania Beretta’s work displays a conversation between two technological devices: the camera and the sewing-machine. The works' formative stages begin with the lens and the dark room, before Beretta transfers her creative energies to sewing stitches with a needle. Computers are rejected during this creative process, and the hands resume contact with the material, transferring neuronal information from the use of the tool to a creative language, a gesture. As Viana Conti has detailed, for Beretta, in this part of the process there is “a will to be backward…(a) resistance to speed”. While the work is initially brought into the world with immense speed, signified by the shutter of the camera lens, the processes which follow this are enacted by the artist with a meditative slowness.
