Rebecca Sitar

Neither figurative nor purely abstract, Rebecca Sitar’s practice has been described as ‘hermetic’ in its resistance to following any single orthodoxy. Working across the practices of painting and photography, Sitar’s work is distinguished by its subtle fusion of abstract and figurative elements. For critic Sue Hubbard, the artist’s ‘painterly language and her strangely emblematic images are imbued with veiled meanings and resonate with compressed, yet oblique personal feelings. These are works that do not deal – despite the painterly marks and the layered acrylic’s luminosity – with surface but with depth.’
