About the artist

Marlene Oliver
“These works highlight and question the philosophical differences between high tech medical therapies… and the ancient holistic therapies that encourage us to know and inhabit our bodies as a whole.”
Looking to repair the fragmented dislocation between contemporary medicine and a digital gaze, Marlene Oliver’s work conveys the loss and fear we hold for loved ones during their medical journey. Working with laser cutting technology and using data-imagery of the human body, Oliver layers translucent papers in combination with screen printing and inks to achieve a “spectral yet controlled and measured aesthetic”. Half of Me Will Always Be With You, part of the Taggedseries by Oliver, explores the metaphor of radiographic fluorescent traces that ‘tag’ or highlight proteins in the body to indicate disease. By manipulating MRI scans and CT datasets, the artist is able to arrange the figures in various bodily positions - revealing spectacular, glowing interiors.
