About the artist
Jenny Yu-Chen Liu
Jenny Yu-Chen Liu, a graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art in London, creates colour rich paintings filled with intensely wisped highlights; fleeting traces of pigment that fluidly scatter the eye across the surface of the work. Liu employs a technique similar to the Indonesian Batik process, in which wax is used to prevent dye from penetrating cloth, leaving blank areas in the dyed fabric. The process is often repeated many times to create complex multicoloured designs. Liu has adapted this method for painting on canvas; she applies intricate stencils on the surface instead of wax and pours paint in place of dye, working over it methodically to create vigorous colour blends layered with energetic marks that surge like electric currents. The final result is a piece that can be understood within the conceptual framework of colour field painting; the rich, dynamic red surface vitalises our emotions and procures an enlivened response from the viewer.
