Dániel Bernáth graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2014, where he studied under Imre Bukta. His art is closely connected to contemporary trends in abstract painting. Bernáth’s works often function as independent series that explore and reinterpret both historical and contemporary paradigms of painting. Nature, rural lifestyles, and the captivating flora and fauna of the Mátra region are his primary sources of inspiration. He translates his observations of various organisms’ survival strategies into an abstract painterly language. The landscape and natural environment, along with the cycles of living things, profoundly influence his art, as do the historical references to abstract colour fields that reinterpret the scenery. Bernáth’s most recent paintings, created in 2024, continue to point towards the abstraction of colour field painting, with the natural vistas he has experienced subtly pulsing in the background of his compositions. He has spent the majority of his creative period in the Mátra region, where the rustic, rural stretcher frames of his earlier paintings also originated. The dissolution of his living and working environment in the Mátra marks the beginning of a new phase in his artistic journey.
As a prominent talent of his generation, he has participated in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. In 2015, he won the ESSL CEE Art Award, and from 2020 to 2022, he received the Derkovits Art Scholarship for three consecutive years. In 2022, he was awarded the Strabag Artaward International, which included the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the Strabag Kunstforum in Vienna. He has participated in several significant residency programs: in Krems, Austria, in 2017; in Freising – Schafhof, Germany, in 2021; and in Tossa de Mar, Spain, in 2023. His works are featured in numerous important Hungarian and international collections.
